Types of Glass

Glass comes in many different types, however in the Repair industry we tend to use 4 or 5 different types. These are….

Float Glass

This at the moment is by far the most common type of glass and comes in 4mm or 6mm thickness. Float glass is a general purpose glass and is fitted in windows above 800mm from floor level, excluding doors and windows within 300mm of a door.

Toughened Safety Glass

This glass is very strong but if broken shatters into tiny pieces, unlike float glass which shards. This glass is used in doors and windows under 800mm from floor height to comply with current building regulations. Again comes in 4mm and 6mm thickness.

Obscure Glass

Used in bathrooms and where privacy is required. Available in many different patterns and levels of obscurity.

K Glass

From April 2002 all new windows and doors had to be fitted with K glass. It is available in all above options. K glass is glass with a microscopic coating of metal which reflects heat.

Laminated Glass

The application for laminated glass is usually in commercial properties. This is because laminated glass is made up of 2 x pieces of 3mm glass with .4mm layer of plastic between them 6.4mm overall. When Laminated is broken it is still held together by the plastic so still gives a level of safety and security for example a shop front.
